The rumors have been out for a while about a new R2-D2 as well as the Tatooine GWP, but today was a big day for both sets and Instagram has been flooded with the news.
Although we just shared more information on the Tatooine micro build in the last few days, a clearer image has now been revealed. More importantly, however, we now know that the gift-with-purchase will be available with any LEGO Star Wars purchase over $85. For those not interested in the R2-D2, this is good news as it won’t be tied to the purchase of only that set as was the case with Yoda’s Lightsaber and Mos Eisley Cantina.
Perhaps the more exciting bit of news is that starting May 1st, 75308 R2-D2 will be available, and the first images are now available.
R2-D2 will come with a plaque stand similar to 75306 Probe Droid and feature a new 50 Years of Lucasfilm icon. Only time will tell if more sets this year will include this new emblem. Notably R2 comes with a minifigure version of himself like 75187 BB-8. It is most likely just the lighting in the photo, but the dome on this figure looks almost chrome! The build will also include some hidden features including a periscope!
What do you think of the new set? Will you wait until May 4th to purchase it, or are you going to get it on release day?
