75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader: An Ill-Fated Duel?

Announced via the Obi-Wan Wednesdays product announcements on StarWars.com a week after the third episode of the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi series aired on Disney+, this set was initially met with raised eyebrows. With fans having already witnessed the lackluster fight between the titular character and his first – and last – Padawan, the feeling that this set was going to be exciting as a paperweight was rife.

Fleeing their Inquisitor pursuers, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his charge, Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, find themselves in need of a clandestine escape route off the once-lush/now-derelict planet of Mapuzo. Before they can make use of a secret underground railway set up to help Force-sensitives and Jedi escape the clutches of the Empire, Darth Vader arrives to corner his old Master.

While a gravel quarry might not be the most exciting of locations for a face-off a decade in the making, it was where Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi clashed for the first time since the duel that created the black-clad Dark Lord of the Sith.

General sentiment changed once 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader was released as part of the Summer wave, and community opinion shifted when its play features were revealed. Still, there’s no escaping the set’s most obvious feature.

Like a number of other sets released in the Summer wave, this comes packed in a chunky box that suggests it is a sizeable set – but is more likely designed to compensate for the price increase that coincided with the set’s release. Decorated with eye-catching graphics that depict the dynamic nature of their clash, a cartoon-like image of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader is shown in the bottom left corner, while on the opposite side the minifigure contents are on display.

Packed into three bags, the 408-piece set is built – unsurprisingly – from the base up and takes 45 minutes to an hour to assemble, and – regardless of the negative reviews 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader is getting – is a fun build.

Detailing includes a raised platform with a smelter, a rocky outcrop that serves as a sniper position, a mining cart that can be flipped over and two rotating bases for the all-important lightsaber battle. Sadly there’s just no way of getting around the slab it all sits on.

As dull as the base is, it serves a vital purpose in that it contains the mechanism that allows the floor segments to rift apart and the burning ore to pop up, adding a touch of color to the flat and uninspiring surface.

The minifigures included with this set are Obi-Wan Kenobi with a blue lightsaber, Darth Vader with a red lightsaber, Tala Durith (in her Imperial officer’s uniform instead of the civilian fatigues that were worn in the scene) with a blaster pistol, and NED-B with a power hammer and backpack accessory element.

With the molten rock-lined crevice of 75236 Duel on Starkiller Base and the epic lava flows of 75269 Duel on Mustafar, fire is the element that seems to bind most Jedi duels – and 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader, in their purposefully anticlimactic duel on Mapuzo, is no different.

No matter how you feel about the duel on Mapuzo, this set is a clash in itself. While it does offer a number of action features, its lumpy base conveys an inert state and with Obi-Wan’s dynamic pose supported by static bricks, the playset ultimately comes across as an inanimate display piece.

While it’s a must-have for the completist and LEGO Star Wars minifigure collector, the average fan isn’t going to miss much if they pass this set up.
